Here are some more information for Head Gasket:

The head gasket refers to the seal that between the engine block and the engine head which is widely used in the modern internal combustion. It is a critical part to keep coolant and water out and the oil in. When the gas and air mixture is fired by the spark plug, the tightness to the combustion chamber would create a pressured space to favor the power produce. Whatever, the head gasket tends to be an important part in the engine system, such as in the car engine.
For the engine of the car, what does the head gasket signify? It is certain that the good engine in the good condition would provide the car with the needed power. Thus, one of the important ways to make the car run well is to take care of the engine. And the head gasket determines a lot on the engine. As every car holds the own recommended specifications and a torque. Thus, the head gasket must be put in the right place to ensure the function as a seal. If it fails to work, things would go bad. And the cost on the repair appears to be not a small sum. Actually, attention on the status of the head gasket should be driven all the time.
As time goes by, it is usual to find many parts of the car are more or less damaged or such kind of things. It is wise to check the car within a regular period. Considering of the head gasket, it is suggested to check in the following steps. Firstly, check the bolt to make sure that they are torque as specified. Retighten it if necessary. Then, the check on the exhaust is needed. As it is well know that the black signs mean that the engine is running rick. As the modern cars are generally made of the lighter materials, the engine can not bear great cranks and such things. Thus, it there is the white or gray exhaust, it may be the signs for the problems with the engine. If you have done the checking regularly, you have protected yourself from the annoyed situations. At last, if the worst thing happens that the head is yanked off the engine, the only thing is to repair it as soon as possible. It is said that the time for repairing is long. No matter what, attention should be driven. Otherwise, a large sum of money and time would go away.

Keep Your Engine Oil-tight With Honda Valve Cover Gaskets
Lubrication is important in engines because this is what literally keeps vehicles running smoothly. To keep engine components sliding along each other, oil is pumped up the pushrods and then dispersed beneath the valve cover to lubricate the rocker arms. Drain-back holes along the engine head let the oil drip back down to the oil pan to recirculate.
Underneath the hood of your Honda, this closed system is shut from dirt and debris by a Honda valve cover, and is sealed by a Honda valve cover gasket. The valve cover acts like the lid of your pressure cooker. If you look beneath this pressure cooker lid, you will notice a band of silicone or rubber running along the inner circumference of the lid. This is the gasket that makes the lid air-tight. The Honda valve cover gasket, however, keeps the valve cover oil-tight.
As with all car parts that protect other components from damage, Honda valve covers and Honda valve cover gaskets are prone to impairment themselves. If the oil is not changed regularly, sludge can accumulate in the drain-back holes and hold back the recirculation process. This makes the oil build up in the valve cover longer and exert more pressure on the gasket. Excess pressure is normally released by a valve, but if this valve is restricted, the oil gasket can “blow out” to let this pressure escape. Once this happens, an oil leak occurs, causing oil to be drained from the engine, which then leads to internal damage. Spotting an oil leak is easy: puddles form under the car and drip while being driven. Other symptoms usually include smoke and a burning smell. The longer you wait to fix it, the higher the cost of repairs will be. If your gasket is causing the leak, replace it right away with a brand-new and high-quality Honda valve cover gasket.

How does a blown head gasket work?
I am currently looking into getting this small little subaru with a blown head gasket. It is a 1985 GL Sedan. And I would like to know what exactly the head gasket does.
Does the car still run with it blown?
About how much does it cost to fix it?
Even after its fixed, will it effect other parts of the car?
Please help.
The head gasket is placed between the block and the head. This is used to allow the head to be separated from the block for repair. There are many channels and ports that run from the block to the head. Oil, coolant, and combustion. Keeps these 3 elements where they belong. The car can continue to run with it blown. This is not cheap to repair. Need to have the head surfaced and if it is to thin to shave, warped, or cracked it will have to be replaced. While it is off the car need to have valves redone. Total cost in a shop probably 800 to 2000 depending on the shop, condition and repair needed. Yes it could effect the car and still have problems after repair. It is very important to know how long it has been this way and if it still runs. But I wouldn't take any bodies word for it. I couldn't say if you should buy it without seeing myself. If water gets into the combustion chamber while at a high rpm it can what is called hydraulic lock and stop the motor from running instantly. When this happens it can crack a piston bend valves and many other major issues that consist of replacing the engine. Also when coolant gets into the motor it mixes into the oil and goes through the bearings and entire motor. If it is this way for any length of time it will rust and can clog oil ports also resulting in the replacement of the engine. Considering they are selling it with a blown head gasket this may have already been determined. Since you have no way of knowing I would say don't buy it. That is unless you plan on putting a new motor in it and the rest of the car is in very good condition. Hope this will help you out
1993 Pontiac Grand Am SE from North America - Comments
At 75000 miles the alternator died. At 99000 miles the sensors started to go bad. I bought this car used from a dealer in South Carolina. It had been in a semi-minor accident in the front right which was repaired very well. It is almost not noticeable until you lift the hood.
