Motorhome touring holidays are becoming more and more popular in England and Europe and many people consider hiring an American type vehicle such as a Winnebago instead of the home grown British or European models produced by companies such as Swift or Elddis.
Before deciding to hire a winnebago for use in England however, it is worthwhile considering the arguments for and against. It should be noted that Winnebago is actually a manufacturer's name even though it is now used as a generic term for American Motorhome and there are many other makers, such as Airstream. While considering the hire of such a vehicle it is wise to consider switching to an English equivalent if the circumstances warrant it. Let us consider the pros and cons of the American motorhome against the British equivalent.
Winnebago motorhomes are left hand drive whilst English vehicles are right hand drive, this is a definite disadvantage if you are intending to stay in the uk, however if you are going to mainland Europe the winnebago is more suitable. Winnebago vehicles are also long vehicles, designed for the u.s. roads which are wider and much straighter than English roads, you would not want to make a three point turn on an English road in a winnebago although many have rearward facing cameras to aid you in this task. Winnebago engines are designed for u.s. gas prices, whether diesel or petrol the fuel consumption will be high and must be factored into your decision. The side door on an american vehicle will open onto the road instead of the pavement or verge when used in England, this could be a major safety issue, especially if you are taking children with you. Although reliable Winnebagos can break down just like any other motor vehicle and spares availability can be limited in the U.K. with many parts having to be shipped in from America expertise in repairing these vehicles can also be scarce.
On the other hand winnebago motorhomes are more spacious with many having slide out sides ( for use whilst parked) which create huge living areas, they are normally fully equipped with air conditioning, central heating, showers, hook up for waste, tv, electricity, separate bedrooms, built in generators, auto-levelling air jacks, lcd televisions, automatic transmission, air suspension, separate dining areas and roof deck seating. In general they are much more luxurious than their British counterparts, they also tend to have more powerful engines. It should however be noted that if the motorhome weighs more than 7.5 tonnes you will not be able to drive it on a normal car drivers licence , you will need a class "C" truck licence.
You therefore have to choose whether the static advantages of a winnebago are more important than the drawbacks of fuel consumption, maneuverability, safety etc in coming to the decision of whether to hire a winnebago or whether to go for an English motorhome. Whichever you choose you are bound to enjoy the freedom of the road, that outdoor camping feelgood factor and the ever changing scenery as you tour the countryside.

2003 Lincoln Navigator Suspension Problems - Why It Fails
It absolutely was a surprise that Lincoln find the tight and twisty back roads of sleepy Santa Barbara, California, to commence the primary drive of the luxurious new 2003 Navigator, as an alternative to an expansive horse ranch or Beverly Hills country club. It absolutely was a straight bigger surprise the fact that jumbo SUV seemed as nimble on those roads countless other, smaller vehicles. In addition to being constructed out of wore on along with the miles accumulated, it became increasingly easy to overlook the Navigator's large size as a result of significant changes to the chassis, steering, and Lincoln Navigator suspension. It may not be a coincidence that ride and handling improvements are classified as the first things we noticed relating to this vehicle: Navigator engineers spent a substantial amount of time studying the Lincoln driving experience, and set out to achieve consistent driving dynamics surrounding the Lincoln line. Calling it "Lincoln DNA," engineers planned to create an "addictive driving experience, unique for Lincoln" and embed it "across every vehicle in the lineup. It's this that today's luxury vehicle customers expect," says Engineering Director, Dr. Mike Renucci.
To make this happen new a higher level refinement, the Navigator has moved to somewhat of a fully boxed hydro-formed frame that may be 70 percent torsion-ally stiffer than last year's classical frame for reduced noise, vibration, and harshness, even on rough and uneven road surfaces. Which includes a more rigid platform to hang from, a detailed-new air suspension may very well be fine-tuned to better balance ride comfort, off-road ability, and payload capability. The revolutionary front and rear suspension assemblies employ upper and lower control arms with spring-over-shock load-leveling air springs and monotube dampers as an alternative to the independent front / solid-axle rear configuration found in the prior Navigator and standard in the current Cadillac Escalade and Lexus LX 470. Navigator replaces its previous recirculating ball system with a carefully tuned rack-and-pinion setup for friction-free steering with smooth transitions and low effort around town, completing the dynamics transformation.
Much like the chassis, the outside receives an extensive makeover for 2003. When using the exception with the roof panel and front doors, each of the bodywork is completely new. In front, behold Lincoln's signature grille, clear-lens quad-beam halogen headlamps, and integrated tow hooks and fog-lamps. For easier entry and exit, optional power running boards deploy each time a door is opened - sliding out four inches through the rocker panel and three inches toward the rear - and retract should the doors are closed. The electricity-assisted lift gate can raise or lower the door in about 10 seconds, and automatically retracts should it encounter an obstacle (effectively demonstrated when Lincoln Mercury Product Specialist Jim Cain confidently stuck his arm under the closing gate).
Inside, seating surfaces are leather which has a milled pebble finish, floor and mats are plush carpet, A-pillars and headliner are textured fabric, and also other surfaces, comprising the center panel, controls, switches, and components of trim are painted a low-luster satin nickel color with sparing touches of chrome for a sophisticated appear and feel. Standard features include dual-zone climate control with auxiliary outlets and controls for your second- and third row passengers; two-driver memory setting for front power seats, mirrors, brake and accelerator pedals; AM/FM premium audio system with in-dash six-disc CD changer; remote key-less entry with keypad; and a protracted Rear Park Assist system that uses the variety of ultrasonic sensors and radar to detect obstacles when reversing. Split folding second- and third-row seats boast three-point belts at each position, as well as the third-row seats can optionally power-fold with precisely the push of your mouse button. A lower-tech contribution to the lux quotient, more extensive sound absorbing materials and better body sealing help supply a more quiet cabin.

What's the safest way for me to lift my car and work underneath it?
I understand basically that lifting it with a crank or hydraulic lift (usually equipped with most vehicles) is enough for changing a flat tire, but if I need to slide up under it,.....what's the SAFEST method for getting underneath to do minor work on suspension? Need some advice here before I go and hurt myself. Thanks....
NEVER WORK UNDER A CAR WHEN JUST RESTING ON THE JACK! That is a very good safety rule.
Car ramps or car stands (jack stands), are best for when working under a vehicle at home, better still would be a pit or a hoist, but you're unlikely to have access to those.
The ramps will elevate the car, either front or rear, but not both at the same time. The stands can be used to get all four wheels off the ground but then you will need four of them. For the ramps, you just drive your vehicle onto them. For the stands you jack up the car, put the stands in place, then remove the jack, making sure the stands are taking the weight on the chassis.
