why it want start. a 500 H.D. 4x4 polaris sportsman 1999 4-wheeler?

we have a 4-wheeler and we can't get it to start. we have put a new spark plug. we have drained the gas and put new gas in it in case it was old gas. we have used battery cables to try starting it and have tried the pull start string. with the battery cables we were able to get it start at one point a coule weeks ago and now we can't get it to start. when we tried the pull string we got it to start a couple of times and get it to idle but then it would just go back out. does anyone have any idea why we can't get it to start and stay on? also when we were first workin on it we were able to use battery cables and use the key and start it up with the starter but now it just clicks and wont turn over so we had to result to the pull start but that broke also the string didnt break but something inside did because it wont suck it back in its just hanging out what can we do

I have a Polaris 330 magnum, when the battery starts getting low, it will not start. I have jumped it from the car to get it started and had no adverse effect.
First I would remove the pull cord and fix that so it will pull back in. Sounds like the spring broke, or pulled out.
Next, I would get a new battery, on mine if the battery is not perfectly 100% it will not start, turns over good, but that is it. Also, mine is cold blooded, and the choke needs to be partially set even on a warm day for it to run until it warms up.
Mine is a 2003, and has a safety which I have defeated in the throttle, on mine if you take your thumb off the throttle for about 1 to 2 minutes it will die. I put a piece of tape over the contacts, it is a pain in the butt when irrigating to have the damn thing die all the time.

Anyhow, that is all the things I have noticed with mine, if you have any other questions you can shoot me an email and I will try to help. I don' know how long yours has sat around, but there are some things you can do to clean up a few problems with out a total strip down of the machine. Mines only time of sitting is during the summer, from hunting season through late spring it is in use.
