Ten Reasons Why You Should Go To Germany For Your Next Holiday
1. You want to go somewhere off the beaten trail - no city trip to London or Paris, no beach holiday on the Costa del something-or-the-other, no dolphins and no Mickey Mouses in Florida or California - without seeming willfully eccentric (which means: no Zimbabwe either, and no sightseeing journeys around North Korean power stations)? Guess what: I got just the ticket for you.
2. Germany is some way down the European tourism charts because it lacks the two elements that turn a country into a top hit: world-class cities and sun-drenched beaches. On top of that, Germany's nature lacks the awe-inspiring grandeur of the Grand Canyon and the Himalayas. (Even Germany's Alps are a trifle on the twee side: her highest mountain clocks in at just under 3000 metres while the Swiss alone have about 100 summits from where to look down on that.) Germany's unique selling point is the opportunity she affords the intelligent traveler of weaving all the requirements of a successful family holiday - nature, culture and some moderate physical activity (aka "something to do for the kids") - into a single holiday experience. Germany is the perfect country for a civilized outdoor experience - what I would call easy hiking.
3. What is easy hiking? Easy hiking means: adventure without pain or existential risk, a taste of nature that does not involve painting yourself "red in tooth and claw". It means sleeping in hotels and hiking in civilized portions of no more than three or four days at a time instead of trying to wolf down an entire mountain range in a single bite. And it means taking the time to make a stopover wherever there is something interesting to see: a castle, a country church, a picturesque village. Sounds interesting? Then you will want to read on.
4. Let's start with the German hiking trails. They are true wonders of organization, well marked - the best ones have a clearly visible logo posted somewhere on a tree every quarter mile or so - and sub-divided into perfectly portioned, bite-sized stages of between ten and fifteen miles that take you from one country town to another. They are the autobahns of hiking.
5. German hiking trails would not be what they are without German villages. Because the country is so densely populated, there is always a village somewhere near-by. And far from being a nuisance, as some people may think: intruders into what they have conceived as a one-on-one tryst with nature, villages are a network of shelter, support and even entertainment. At the very least, and most basic, they prevent you from having to carry your bed along with three days of food and water on your back: because you know you can spend the night in an inn - and store up new provisions the next morning!
6. One rung up the ladder, we have the German country towns. German cities may look as though they had all been built at the same time by the same guys, following the same recipe, after some major catastrophe had erased nearly everything which dates further back than, say, the 1950s. Which is, of course, exactly what happened. Many of Germany's small towns, on the other hand, are great. They were spared the devastation of WWII, because they were not important enough to merit the expense of a large-scale air assault, and they are spared the devastation of modern tourism because they are not fancy enough to merit the expenses of a three-day break. And you can find interesting and pretty towns virtually anywhere: every area of Germany has at least one or two. Treasures await!
7. And, of course, Germany's nature is not half bad either. There may be no Grand Canyon, but you will be surprised at the variety on offer: there is the sea and there are the Alps, there are lakes, dramatic rock formations, majestic rivers, peaceful valleys, forests, meadows. And you know what's best? That all of this is easily accessible, thanks to:
8. Germany's public transport network. Fine, there are exceptions, there are some remote regions, too, small towns and villages where one bus goes out early in the morning and one bus brings the commuters home at 6 pm with precious little in between (or after), but these are really exceptions whereas in much of the European countryside, this is the norm. In general, all stage posts of German hiking trails are accessible by public transport, so you can start and end your walk anywhere in the knowledge that the next major country town - hotels! cinemas! restaurants! - is only a short ride away. What more can you ask for?
9. Well, how about that: no dangerous wildlife. No wolves, no cougars, and definitely no bears. And if you don't think that's a plus, just talk to anyone of a slightly nervous disposition who has ever been hiking in North America, particularly on the Western side of the continent, where Ursus Horribilis, I believe, is feeling slightly peckish tonight. Hey, wait a minute: isn't that your tent he is heading for?
10. Finally, Germany is centrally located, in the "heart of Europe" as they say. If you get tired of Germany, there is always somewhere else to go: Germany shares borders with nine countries, more than any other country in Europe, and all of them are either full or (in the case of Switzerland) associated members of the Schengen Agreement which has turned the whole of Central and Western Europe into one virtually borderless area. Germany may have no world-class cities of her own, but the fact that Paris, Amsterdam, Prague and even the cities of Northern Italy may not be more than a few hours away somehow takes the sting out of that.

Trail Running Shoes Help?
I'm a beginner at competing in trail running races. This year I have been competing in 5k to 15k races to work myself up to longer races in the future.
I purchased a pair of Asics Gel Trail Sensor shoes this year and I find that even though these shoes are very comfortable running the trails but after running the bottom of my feet ache like crazy.
The trails I run are usually single track mountain bike trails that are extremely rocky, steep with numerous roots. FYI - I am neutral prone.
So, if anyone has a line on a great runner that that can take these extreme conditions and make my feet happy and not make me not want to burn my runnners after every race, I would appreciate the info.
Unfortunately you need to find that out for your self. I have tried several shoes and ended up with Asics as the best. I started with Reebok's and they were good but wore out to quick I thought and then went to New Balance and even though they were pretty good I got terrible shine splints so I went to the more expensive Asics and wa la.
So I think you may just have to search for the magic shoe your self.
One thing you might want to try though is some sort of insert.
I did buy Reebok for trail running or as a cross trainer but when you lift a pair of Reebok's compared to Asics well as you know asics are amazingly light.
Have you ever given a thought towards maybe you aren't neutral prone? I would make sure of that before I go buying another brand of shoes. Asics are very good shoe.
